Pen name of Louis-Charles-Adélaide Chamisso de Boncourt
German writer. He is known for the story Peter Schlemihl, about a man who sold his shadow. Chamisso was born into a French family who left France because of the French Revolution; subsequently he went as a botanist on Otto von Kotzebue’s trip around the world 1815–18, recounted in Reise um de Welt 1821. His verse includes the cycle of lyrics Frauenliebe und Frauenleben 1831, set to music by Schumann.
