English architect. He was professor at the Royal College of Art 1953–75, and president of the Royal Academy 1976–84. He was director of architecture for the Festival of Britain on the South Bank in London 1948–51, in which pavilions designed by young architects helped to popularize the Modern Movement. His books include Victorian Architecture 1948.
