Baron Casey (1890-1976).
Australian diplomat, Liberal politician, and governor-general 1965–69. In 1924 he was involved in the formulation of the Statute of Westminster and, after a time in the House of Representatives, in 1940 was appointed minister plenipotentiary in Washington, US, beginning Australia's formal diplomatic representation overseas. He was a member of the British war cabinet in World War 11 and governor of Bengal, India, 1944–46. Reelected to federal parliament 1949, he was minister for external affairs 1951–60, working to build up Australia's relations with Asia and to foster the American alliance. Unable to work harmoniously with prime minister Menzies, he retired in 1960 and was granted a life peerage.
