3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792) British Tory politician, prime minister 1762–63. On the accession of George III in 1760, he became the chief instrument in the king's policy for breaking the power of the Whigs and establishing the personal rule of the monarch through Parliament.
Island and resort in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland; area 120 sq km/46 sq mi. The chief town is Rothesay. There is farming and tourism. It is separated from the mainland in the N by a winding channel, the Kyles of Bute. With Arran and the adjacent islands it comprised the former county of Bute, merged 1975 into the region of Strathclyde.
