(Fanny) (1752-1840) English novelist and diarist. She achieved success with Evelina, a novel published anonymously 1778, became a member of Dr Johnson’s circle, received a post at court from Queen Charlotte, and in 1793 married the French émigré General d’Arblay (died 1818). She published three further novels, Cecilia 1782, Camilla 1796, and The Wanderer 1814; her diaries and letters appeared 1842. She was the daughter of musician Dr Charles Burney (1726–1814).
