(1882-1963) French painter. With Picasso, he founded the Cubist movement around 1907–10. His early work was influenced by Fauvism in its use of pure, bright color, but from 1907 he developed a geometric style and during the next few years he and Picasso worked very closely developing Cubism. It was during this period that he began to experiment with collage and invented the technique of gluing paper, wood, and other materials to canvas. His later work was more decorative but more restrained in its use of color.
