(1885-1945) German field marshal of World War II. He commanded an army group during the German invasions of Poland 1939, Belgium and the Netherlands 1940, and the USSR 1941. After the failure to take Moscow and the Soviet counteroffensive, he was removed from his post, but early 1942 was given command of Army Group South in the Caucasus. He was dismissed July 1942 after a dispute over strategy with Hitler.
