(1874-1937) English theater manager. She was responsible for re-opening Sadler's Wells Theatre, London, 1931. From 1934 Sadler's Wells specialized in productions of opera and ballet: the resultant companies eventually became the Royal Ballet and the English National Opera.
After a period in South Africa, she returned to London 1895, and managed the Old Vic Theatre from 1912, starting a complete series of productions of Shakespeare's plays. The National Theatre Company performed at the Old Vic from 1961–76.
