Kada je u srednjem veku mlad muškarac bio proglašen za vitezha, on je stavljao mamuze na noge i podizao mač. Time je pokazivao da je spreman da se bori za svog gospodara. Mamuze su imale simbolično značenje za ratnika na konju. Ceremonija proglašenja mnogo je značila za mladog viteza. On je već proveo sedam godina u službi kao paž u velikaškoj porodici i još sedam godina u službi drugog viteza kao štitonoša.
