Small square block used as a space in printing
Small square area or block, especially used as space in printing (abbr. quad).
In environmental studies, a square structure used to study the distribution of plants in a particular place, for instance a field, rocky shore, or mountainside. The size varies, but is usually 0.5 or 1 meter square, small enough to be carried easily. The quadrat is placed on the ground and the abundance of species estimated. By making such measurements a reliable understanding of species distribution is obtained.

ETYM Latin quadrans, -antis, a fourth part, a fourth of a whole, from quattuor four: cf. French quadrant, cadran. Related to Four, Cadrans.
A quarter of the circumference of a circle; SYN. quarter-circle, right angle.

Any of the four areas into which a plane is divided by two orthogonal coordinate axes.
The area enclosed by two perpendicular radii of a circle.

square [ imenica {matematika} ]

(Geometry) A plane rectangle with four equal sides and four right angles; a four-sided regular polygon; SYN. foursquare.
In geometry, a quadrilateral (four-sided) plane figure with all sides equal and each angle a right angle. Its diagonals bisect each other at right angles. The area A of a square is the length l of one side multiplied by itself (a = l x l).
Also, any quantity multiplied by itself is termed a square, represented by an exponent of power for example, 4 x 4 = = and 6.8 x 6.8 = 6.= 46.24.
An algebraic term is squared by doubling its exponent and squaring its coefficient if it has one; for example, (x2)2 = x4 and (6y3)2 = 36yA number that has a whole number as its square root is known as a perfect square; for example, 21and 54,7are perfect squares (with roots of and 23respectively).
