Originally a long-sleeved military jacket of knitted worsted, trimmed with fur or braid and buttoned down the front, it was named for James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan (1797–1868), who led the Charge of the Light Brigade. In the 20th century the style was adapted for casual wear.
